Open the world of dual-color printing from simple models!
2020-09-16

Need an advanced and colorful challenge?

3D printing is a fun hobby, and one that you can make as simple or as complicated as you like. Making stuff in a single material, for example, is pretty much the standard option for most 3D printers and projects. But what if you wanted to print something in more than one material? This is where a dual extruder 3D printer comes in handy.

What's a dual extruder 3D printer?

In software terms, “dualstrusion” works by overlaying two separate (but interlocking) models on top of each other in the same physical space, and the slicing software issues commands to the 3D printer to distinguish between them when printing the object.

Separating the different colors.

Each color of the model that you wish to print is separated into different individual STL objects and then assigned to a particular extruder.

Once each of the STL objects is set, the models are combined and sent to the 3D printer to be printed. For example, if you were printing out a gaming dice, the white square of the die would be one object and the black dots representing the numbers would be a second object. The two separate objects are printed in one pass, combining them as the print progresses.

Thankfully, many models can be found prepared for dual extruder 3D printers. A quick search on 3D model download site Thingiverse will provide you with plenty of dual extruder 3D models to get you printing in two colors straight away. Well, almost….

The following are some relatively simple two-color models, which are interesting and at the same time proficient in two-color printing skills. What are you waiting for? Let’s take a look.

1. Traffic cones. This is probably a necessary small model for getting started with dual-color printing, simple and easy to operate, printing is not easy to make mistakes, suitable for understanding the basic settings of dual-color printing. Print a few more traffic cones of different colors, very delicate and cute. Of course, you can also print with Tronxy X5SA 2E series and enlarge it to normal size, traffic jam will not be a problem~

7.Two Color World. A very early proof of concept for dual extrusion — dating back to 2011 — is the two color world, with a representation of the Earth rendered in blue and green filament. A remixed version is the Giant Hollow Two Color World, which is a super-sized version for folks with bigger printers.
